DJI AP100 Parachute: An Added Layer of Safety for Matrice 400 Operations
September 18, 2026 – Enterprise drone operations require more than powerful aircraft and advanced payloads. When drones operate near people, infrastructure or valuable assets, the safety system supporting the aircraft becomes just as important.
Designed specifically for the DJI Matrice 400, the DJI AP100 Parachute adds an emergency safety layer that helps reduce the aircraft’s descent speed if a serious in-flight problem occurs.

What is the DJI AP100 Parachute?
The DJI AP100 Parachute is an emergency recovery system developed for the Matrice 400.
It supports automatic and manual deployment, independent backup power and continuous system checks. If certain abnormal flight conditions are detected, the system can stop the rotors and deploy its nylon canopy to slow the aircraft’s descent.
At an effective deployment height of at least 30 metres, DJI specifies a stabilised descent rate of 5 m/s or less under its stated test conditions.
The AP100 is designed to reduce risk to the aircraft, its payload and the area below. However, it remains a supplementary safety device and cannot guarantee complete protection against damage, property loss or injury.

Automatic and Manual Deployment
The AP100 can deploy automatically when the aircraft or parachute sensors detect abnormal flight data, such as an unusual pitch or roll angle or an abnormal descent speed.
The remote pilot can also manually deploy the parachute using the on-screen control in DJI Pilot 2.
DJI specifies an automatic deployment response time of 600 milliseconds or less under laboratory conditions. Automatic deployment is disabled in certain close-range conditions around the Home Point, which means pilots must understand the system’s operating conditions before every flight.
Independent Backup Systems
The AP100 includes independent control and rotor-stop links, as well as backup power that can operate for approximately one hour when fully charged.
The parachute also continuously monitors its gas generator and communication links. If the system detects a problem, a warning appears through the Health Management System in DJI Pilot 2.
These checks help make the AP100 part of a repeatable pre-flight safety process rather than an accessory that is simply fitted and forgotten.

Important Operating Considerations
When the AP100 is installed, the Matrice 400 automatically disables its downward and backward mmWave radars. This keeps the parachute’s deployment path clear and helps prevent false obstacle-sensing triggers.
As a result, the aircraft’s ability to detect small obstacles in these directions is limited. Pilots must consider this when planning routes and maintaining safe obstacle clearance.
The total take-off weight of the aircraft, including its payload and accessories, must also remain within the AP100’s supported limit of 15.8 kg.
The AP100 is a single-use safety device. Once it has deployed, the complete unit must be replaced. DJI also recommends retiring and replacing the product three years after activation, even if its self-checks continue to report normal operation.
Supporting Safer Enterprise Drone Operations
The AP100 can strengthen risk controls for Matrice 400 operations across:
- Public safety and emergency response
- Powerline and utility inspections
- Mining and industrial operations
- Infrastructure and construction inspections
- Surveying and mapping
- Large-area asset monitoring
Its purpose is not to make an operation risk-free. It provides an additional response layer when prevention, aircraft redundancy and pilot intervention are no longer enough.
South African Compliance
DJI states that the AP100 supports specific European C5/C6 and United Kingdom UK5/UK6 operating requirements when used in the relevant configurations. These classifications do not automatically apply to South African operations.
Drone operations in South Africa remain subject to the applicable South African Civil Aviation Authority requirements, operational approvals, aircraft configuration and pilot responsibilities.
The AP100 may support an organisation’s safety planning and risk controls, but it does not replace legal compliance, responsible flight planning or safe operating procedures.
